Due to some massive miscalculations, I realized right around my second trip down Highlands Bowl that it was also Buttermilk’s last day. With ski areas closing quickly here in April, I needed this mountain to hit the magic 50. I raced down the street in time to catch the last hour of the last day of Buttermilk’s season.
Best known as the host of the Winter-X games, Buttermilk has the best park of the four mountains and the reputation of being the beginner hill — or “the worst place to ride in Aspen,” according to the locals I asked.
It’s a chill mountain that really is perfect if you’re with a family, learning to ride, or if groomers get you excited. I did find some untouched powder in the aspens. This led to an adventure that included: Getting stuck, hitchhiking failures, snowboarding through rich folk lawns, and ending up on a cross country trail. Check Buttermilk off the list! Now back to Aspen Highlands for their end of the season party.
